Therapy that makes sense

Helping you understand & relate to yourself differently to create lasting change.

Trauma-informed CBT and evidence-based therapy for anxiety, low mood, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Therapy that makes sense of your experiences with curiosity and compassion - using relatable, practical explanations rather than psychological jargon.

Does This Sound Familiar?

Many people come to therapy after months - or even years - of telling themselves they'll cope on their own. You might recognise some of these thoughts...

Maybe you've been telling yourself...

It's not that bad.

I should be able to cope with this on my own.

I don't want to be a burden.

Other people have it worse.

I don't even know where to start.

Everyone else seems to cope better than I do.

I'll think about therapy when life feels a little less busy.

What if therapy doesn't help?

Maybe this is just who I am.

When you're used to carrying on, it's easy to keep putting yourself last. You tell yourself you'll deal with it later, hoping things will improve on their own.

But something still doesn't feel quite right

Despite doing your best to keep everything going, something still feels off.

Maybe you're exhausted from overthinking or constantly second-guessing yourself.

Perhaps you're always putting other people's needs first, feeling overwhelmed, or finding yourself stuck in the same patterns no matter how hard you try.

From the outside, it might look like you're coping. But inside, you're feeling anxious, emotionally drained, or disconnected from yourself.

Deep down, you know something needs to change.

You want life to feel different - not perfect, just lighter.

It doesn't have to stay this way

Therapy isn't about changing who you are. It's about understanding yourself with curiosity and compassion, making sense of the patterns that have developed over time, and discovering new ways of responding so you can move forward with greater confidence, self-trust and emotional wellbeing.

If you're wondering whether therapy could help, a free 15-minute consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about how I work, and see whether we're the right fit. If you already know you'd like to begin, you're also welcome to get in touch to arrange an initial assessment.

Meet Jo

Jo Aubrey - Trauma-Informed | BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Hi, I'm Jo.

I believe therapy should help you understand and relate to yourself differently - not leave you feeling overwhelmed by psychological jargon or wondering what's "wrong" with you.

Using a trauma-informed CBT approach, I help people make sense of their patterns with compassion, build a kinder relationship with themselves, and create meaningful, lasting change.

With over 12 years' experience across the NHS and private practice, I'm also a qualified Occupational Therapist, registered with the HCPC, bringing a broad understanding of mental health and wellbeing to my work.

My Therapy Approach & Style

One of the things clients often tell me is that therapy with me makes things finally "click."

I don't think therapy should feel full of jargon or complicated theories. Instead, I use everyday language, metaphors, visual explanations, and examples from your own life and interests to help make sense of what's happening. Whether we're talking about anxiety, self-criticism, people-pleasing, or perfectionism, my aim is to help you genuinely understand your patterns - not just learn psychological terms. Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to you. You don't need to know where to start or have all the answers- we'll make sense of things together, at a pace that feels right for you. Being trauma-informed doesn't mean therapy has to focus on the past; it means understanding your experiences with curiosity, while keeping your goals at the heart of our work. Because when something makes sense, change becomes much easier.

Who I work with
You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted.

Perhaps you're caught in cycles of overthinking, self-criticism or worry, finding it difficult to switch off, or feeling like you've lost confidence in yourself. Maybe you're struggling with low mood, stress, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or feeling disconnected from the person you'd like to be. Many of the people I work with are kind, caring and capable, yet spend so much time meeting the needs of others that they neglect their own. They often tell me they feel "not good enough", worry about making mistakes or letting people down, and find it difficult to show themselves the same compassion they so readily offer to others. Whether you've been experiencing these difficulties for years or something has recently changed, therapy offers a space to understand what's keeping you stuck, develop practical tools to create meaningful change, and build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with yourself. I welcome adults from all backgrounds, identities and life experiences. My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed and committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful space where you can feel accepted, understood and able to be yourself without judgement.

Clinical CBT Supervision

If you’re seeking face-to-face appointments, these are held at my Derby practice in a private, confidential space. Some people prefer meeting in person, as it can feel more grounded and contained.

Online therapy brings the same professional support into the comfort of your own home. These video sessions offer flexibility, making it easier to fit regular therapeutic support into your naturally busy life and routine.

I provide supportive clinical supervision for CBT therapists. These sessions focus on your professional growth, navigating complex clinical dilemmas, and maintaining high standards of care through a reflective approach.
